This tutorial was inspired by my recent love of Tabata Workouts & Running! But it really is a great quick sew for anyone. It works well for men who run and hunt as well. I prefer them in solid colors for headbands, but you can use prints too.
Multi-Sport Scarf & Headband Tutorial
MATERIALS:
- 2/3 yard or a fat half of Cotton/Lycra knit fabric.
- Rotary Cutter & Mat or SHARP scissors and ruler
- Sewing Machine
- Pins
- Coordinating Thread
PIECES:
Cut 1 square the following size. Make sure to have CLEAN cut edges as we will not be hemming.
Youth 17″x17″
Small Adult 18″x18″
Adult 19″x19″
Large Adult 20″x20″
STEP 1:
With RIGHT sides out fold the square in half. Sew a seam 3/8″ from the edge along the long side edge making sure to back stitch at both start and finish.
STEP 2:
Trim off 1/4″ of the seam allowance leaving just a 1/8″ allowance.
STEP 3:
Turn wrong side out and press the seam flat, then sew a new seam 1/4″ from the folded edge/original seam making sure to back stitch at both start and finish. This creates a french seam with no raw edges exposed in the seam allowance.
STEP 4:
Turn back right side out. Push the french seam that is inside to one side or another. Topstitch in place 1/8″ from the seam line making sure to back stitch at both start and finish.

This is a very practical headband. I don’t do sports but I think I can make use of it when I am cooking, too!
