Not only did I get the kids costumes done early this year but I LOVE how they turned out!!!!
Thing 1 & Thing 2 ~ The twins costumes were easy… I bought the wig, turtle neck & we already had the tights. I was going to make a tutu but said screw it half way through (I hate tulle!) and made some quick fleece ones. I made a quick little fleece bow for their wigs to make them extra girly per their request & then I just traced a bowl with a black sharpie on white fleece & wrote on it… then fussy cut the patches to leave the black circle since in the book there is black around it and then I tacked it onto the shirt with a stitch every couple inches around the edge so it would be easy to remove when we are done and they can wear it the rest of the winter.
Then there is the Cat in the Hat… I was tempted to buy one, but for $27 for the poly or felt costumes I just couldn’t do it! So I made Zander’s from scratch taking help from this website, the suit is all from fleece & the hat is all felt. The pattern I started with for the bodysuit/romper is McCall’s M6181 in a size 4. I have to say I am glad that I was just using it for the base!!! First off the pattern envelope gives no height measurement which is silly, so I checked online & size 4 is up to 40″ and he is only 41″ so I figured I would only have to had an inch at most to the legs probably NONE since they always run big. Well WRONG as I was tracing it I noticed the legs looked short… I just eyed it & added 3″ figuring I would adjust it later probably cut most of it off but better safe then sorry… WELL it was barely long enough!!!!
I left off the hood & made fleece binding for the collar. I also left off the mitten flap things and even though the legs were too short the arms were too long and he isn’t that disproportioned! I just winged the bow, but I did make a ‘Cat in the Hat’ bow because his bow only has 1 tail, not two. I just did elastic on the arm & leg openings, it should keep him nice & toasty for our western Washington trick or treating on Sunday!
For the hat I traced 2 bowls, on inside the other, and cut out 2 brim pieces so it would be thicker. Then I cut out 5 strips of felt (2 white & 3 red just like the book of course) to make the stripes & the red circle for the top. It only took about 20 minutes to make??? And is stiff enough that it doesn’t need to be stuffed or anything. I could have gotten one from the page popular for hats, but I tried to get some work done.
I had a VERY happy little boy who was pacing around for over 30 minutes waiting to go to school for his party! On Halloween we will paint his face white & draw whiskers & probably wear white mittens. The school says no face paints so we are just skipping that stuff for today.
This is the first costume I have ever made all the pieces for and I am very proud! It was even more exciting to have someone from B’s office offer to buy it for their grandson next year after seeing Zander wear it.
Time for the good stuff PICTURES! This afternoon we took the kids to B’s work to show off their costumes & took a walk in town afterward for pictures… they were literally STOPPING traffic. I am surprised there weren’t accidents because people were slamming on their brakes to roll down their windows & tell the kids how awesome they were. Surprise, surprise they didn’t want to stay still! So some of the pictures are a little blurry, but I still think they are cute!

We let them out of their red box in town & they were off! (A red minivan can be their red box with a lock right?)
Stopped for a few seconds to be silly!
They found their way to the beach…
And in no time at all they were off again!

These costumes are so adorable. I only wish I could sew. My daughter has a cat in the hat day coming up at her school, and I am struggling on what I am going to do about her cat in the hat costume. :-p
