Preemie NICU Smocks

posted in: Sewing | 16

Well I have been meaning to post these for a while, but I had to get them delivered to SNOMOMS first!  Anyways when my cousin’s little boy Benjamin was born months early weighing in at 2lbs 8oz I searched everywhere for preemie cloths to fit!  Babies under 3lbs are considered ‘micro-preemie’ & you can actually find some stuff on the net to buy, but not many patterns.  So after looking at different things I drafted up a pattern for a NICU friendly preemie smock that fits a good range of sizes.    When babies are in the NICU it really helps the parents to see their little ones wearing some sort of clothing.  BUT with all the monitors & wires many clothes are difficult to get on, or they get in the way of the wires or the nurses… which is what makes these so great!

Anyways when my mothers of multiples clubs… SNOMOMS decided to make hospital bags for the moms I offered to sew up some smocks!  Cindy & Mary… club members purchased some fabric & cut out the peices.  Then I assembled them, finished the edges & added the velcro.  Anyways I do have a .pdf file with the pattern pieces & will probably post a pattern/tutorial for charity use soon.  Anyways heres the finished result…

Hello may I have a copy of the pattern that these smocks were made from. I am also looking for a diaper cover pattern. My granddaughter was born March 12 and only weighs 1 lb. 10 oz and so far she doesn’t have any clothes.

Well, i’m a Nana who just lost a granddaughter who weighed 8 oz. My daughter was 18 weeks pregnant and is going to bury her. I have looked and looked online and have no idea what we can put her in. Do you have any ideas where we can find something suitable in that amount of time. We’re near pontiac, Michigan and Lubbock, TX. Your help would be greatly appreciated. I know that there must be a need for this out there.

Thanks ahead of time for your help! As you know I need this ASAP! Kathy

Kathy I am so sorry for your families loss. I just sent you an email with some different options I found online, but they will all need some modifications. Let me know if there is anything else I can do.

Hi there. My best friend just lost her son due to Trisomy 18. He was barely 3 lbs. She has been wanting to do something to honor him in some way and I thought this would be an awesome way for her to give back in his name. We could make these up and donate them to hospitals/families who are having premie babies. Could you point me to where you’ve posted the pattern? I would love to surprise her with this idea. Thank you.
